Born in 1899 in Ely(3rd qtr 3b:528 ) son of William Arthur and Mary Jane HOXLEY (née GREEN)

1901 census...Aged 1, he was at Broad Street Ely with his father William Arthur HOXLEY [45] born Barnstable, Devon; his mother Mary Jane [37] born Bury St Edmunds; brothers John Frederick [16], William Henry [10], Joseph Claude [8], Albert Edward [5]and Charles Thomas [3]; sisters Elizabeth Helen [14] and Mary Jane [7]; widowed grandmother Elizabeth Ann [77] born Kent. All the children were born in Ely.

1911 census...Aged 11 he was at the Cattle Market, Bury St.Edmunds with his parents,(father an Army pensioner and Toll Collector) with his sister Mary Jane [17]; brothers Albert Edward [15] and Charles Thomas [13]

His brother Joseph Claud died in Salonika in 1916 see here


The medal index card causes some confusion, it has William's Labour Corps number but has him previously in the Lancashire Fusiliers ? Transfer to the Labour Corps was frequently the result of a medical downgrading. No documentation has been found as to the exact cause of death





William Hoxley is buried in Bury St.Edmunds Cemetery compartment 33 grave 38A
