Born in 1889 (2nd qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:737) son of Henry and Charlotte Frances PECKHAM (née BURROUGHS)

1891 census...Aged 2 he was at 36 Peckham Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Henry PECKHAM [34] labourer; his mother Charlotte [34] tailoress; brothers John [14] errand boy, Frederick [12] and Harry [6]; sisters Lucy [10], Caroline [8] and Emma [4]. All were born in Bury St.Edmunds.

1901 census...Aged 11, he was still at 36 Peckham Street with his parents (father now bricklayer's labourer), brothers Frederick (bricklayer's labourer), and William [5]; sisters Lucy, Caroline |(both domestics), Emma (tailoress), Lottie [3] and Maude [10 months].

1911 census...Aged 23, he was a Private in the 2nd Bedfordshires in Bermuda. At 36 Peckham Street still were his parents, sisters Lucy, Carrie, Emma. Lottie and Maud; brother William (telegraph boy). His mother had lost 2 of her 12 children.

He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. The battalion was in trenches on the Menin Road, near Hooge. War Diary
7 Nov 1914..... Enemy broke through line held by Regt about 200 yards to our left, carrying next Regt and some of our men with them. Our supports were moved to left by self, Capt. Monteith [John Cassells MONTEITH] and Adjutant, and assisted in driving enemy back. Qtr. Mstr.Sergt. Byford [4893 Thomas William BYFORD, DCM] (awarded Distinguished C. Medal) collected about 40 men and captured trench held by 21 Germans, killing or capturing all. Pte. Falla [8095 William FALLA, DCM] (awarded Distinguished C. Medal) ran on in advance, and getting on left of trench enfiladed enemy whilst remainder were rushing the trench. Our casualties about 7 officers & 140 other ranks killed wounded 7 missing.
