Born in 1894 (4th qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:779) son of John and Sarah SORE (née LEATHERS)

1901 census...Aged 6, he was at 12 Reed's Buildings, Bury St.Edmunds with his father John SORE [42] bricklayer/journeyman born Stowmarket (Haughley); his mother Sarah [40] (Stowmarket), brothers Henry Charles [17] labourer, Walter [10], Percy [4] and William [2]. All except his father were born in Bury St.Edmunds.

His father died in 1903

His mother had lost 3 of her 12 children (Ellen Louise 1880-1904, Percy Frank 1888-1892 and Maude Elizabeth (1st) 1882-1884)

His brother Percy was killed in Palestine 7 weeks previously see here
and brother Walter was killed in August 1918 see here

He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. From the fact that De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour has Alfred buried in Keerselahoek gives the answer to what the area of the cemetery was originally called.
The 8th West Yorkshires war diary does not locate the action, except they had come from Dragoon Camp three days earlier.
26th Dec 1:15 am a party of 6 men of the enemy attempted to raid one of the front line posts. They were driven off, leaving one man (51 RIR dead) 3 of the post were wounded by bombs.

Dragoon Camp was just east of Boezinge, across the canal. It is likely they were in trenches around Poelcapelle
