Born in 1896 ( 4th qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:720) son of John and Sarah SORE (née LEATHERS)

1901 census...Aged 10, he was at 12 Reed's Buildings, Bury St.Edmunds with his father John SORE [42] bricklayer/journeyman born Stowmarket (Haughley); his mother Sarah [40] (Stowmarket), brothers Henry Charles [17] labourer, Alfred George [6], Percy [4] and William [2]. All except his father were born in Bury St.Edmunds.

His father died in 1903

1911 census...Aged 20 (electrician's mate), he was still at 12 Reed's Buildings with his widowed mother, brothers Alfred (baker's boy), Percy (errand boy), William and Robert [10]; sister Hilda [7]. His mother had lost 3 of her 12 children (Ellen Louise 1880-1904, Percy Frank 1888-1892 and Maude Elizabeth (1st) 1882-1884)

He married Violet BISHOP [20-3-1892] in 1915 in Bury St.Edmunds. They had three children, Jack [25-8-1913], Geoffrey [6-8-1916] and Walter 13-2-1919, at 4 Maynewater Lane, Bury St.Edmunds]

His brother Alfred was killed in Belgium in December 1917 see here
and brother Percy was killed in Palestine in November 1917 see here


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.

On the 26th September the Cambridgeshires relieved the 7th Norfolks in support at LITTLE PRIEL Farm sector. The next day was the momentous capture of the Hindenburg Line. The Cambridgeshires were only in support, but they were guarding the left flank when on their right were 2 American divisions and the remains of the Australian Corps. The battalion, at Little Priel, were heavily shelled and suffered several casualties.One officer wounded, 8 ORs killed and 10 ORs wounded.

Walter Sore is buried in Epehy Wood Farm Cemetery, Epehy Sp Mem B:3
and commemorated on his widow's headstone in Bury St.Edmunds cemetery.
