He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.

The battalion were in the battle for Cochran Alley, half way between Hardecourt and Guillemeont, running eastward from Malzhorn Farm. 300 yards of the trench had been taken on the 16th, but to the right the attack faltered. and the battalion withdrew to the original line. Our snipers had a good day on the 17th and on the night of 17th/18th another attack was launched, the 2nd Suffolk making way for the Gordon Highlanders, two companies moving aside whilst two provided support. On 18th the Germans caused mayhem with a barrage of 5.9s on Cochrane Alley. The battalion hung on and were relieved that evening. They had 31 killed that day, only five have a known grave. The Bury Free Press of 26th August 1916 included him on a list of wounded.

His birth registration makes his real age as 25
