Born in Hepworth (2nd qtr 1892 Thetford 4b:384) son of Robert and Thirza WARD (née ANNESS)

1901 census...Aged 8, not found in this census. At No 8 Howards Cottages, Gt Welnetham were his father Robwrt WARD [40] farm labourer born Stanton; his mother Thirza [40] born Hepworth; sister Gertrude [14] born Hepworth and Hilda [11 months] born Walsham le Willows; brothers Willie [13] born Wattisfield, Thomas [5] born Hawstead, Frank [3] born Gt Welnetham.

1911 census...Aged 19, a stone picker, he was at 10 Baker's Lane,Bury St.Edmunds with his parents, brothers Cecil (mole catcher) and Herbert (cow keeper); sister Hilda May [10]. His mother had lost 4 of her 8 children.

His mother was later at 1 Westgate Place, Westgate Road, Bury St.Edmunds, then by the pension card at 4 Short Brackland before moving to 46 Townley Road, Burnley

His brother Herbert Frank was killed in action in August 1918 see here


He enlisted in Burnley.

He died as a result of injuries or disease sustained during the siege of Kut el Amara. As with all the cemeteries in Iraq, current conditions mena the CWGC cannot undertake repairs or maintence. The temporary remedy is a Book of Remembrance at CWGC HQ
