Born in Great Welnetham in 1898 (2nd qtr 1898 Thingoe 4a:806) son of Robert and Thirza WARD (née ANNESS). The given names regularly switched from Herbert Frank (birth registration) to Frank Herbert

1901 census...Aged 3, he was at No 8 Howards Cottages, Gt Welnetham were his father Robwrt WARD [40] farm labourer born Stanton; his mother Thirza [40] born Hepworth; sister Gertrude [14] born Hepworth and Hilda [11 months] born Walsham le Willows; brothers Willie [13] born Wattisfield, and Thomas [5] born Hawstead. Brother David has not been found in this census

1911 census...Aged 13, cow keeper, he was at 10 Baker's Lane,Bury St.Edmunds with his parents, brothers David (stone picker), Cecil (mole catcher) and Herbert (cow keeper); sister Hilda May [10]. His mother had lost 4 of her 8 children.

His mother was later at 1 Westgate Place, Westgate Road, Bury St.Edmunds, then by the pension card at 4 Short Brackland before moving to 46 Townley Road, Burnley

His brother David died of Wounds in Iraq in 1917 see here


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.

The War Diary has
Aug 22nd 2:45 a,..Division rang up Rear HQ also Bde Maj.54th Inf Bde informing us that patrols of 54th Inf Bde had pushed forward and had encountered no enemy. 54th Inf Bde on line roughly ALBERT-MEAULTE Road. This being line of primary barrage line, line table had to be altered accordingly. Coys and 58th Div and 12th Div. informed and alternatives effected by 3:15 am - Message phoned to this effect to GSO 1 Division. Special Order of the Day issued (appendix 77).
