Herbert John Crick was born in Cockfield (4th qtr 1891 Cosford 4a:714), son of Ephraim and Susannah CRICK (née CLARK). Herbert John to the family, he was John in the Army and on the memorial.

1901 census...Aged 9, he was at Middle Yard, Cockfield with his widower father Ephraim CRICK [40] farm labourer; brothers Albert [7] and William F. [4]. All were born in Cockfield. His mother, born in Gazeley, had died in 1896, aged 30,

His father married Letitia MOTT in 1904.

1911 census...Aged 19, he was at Chapel Road, Cockfield with his father, brothers Albert and William (all were farm labourers); stepmother Letitia [36]; half sisters Ethel [12], Winifred [9], Alice [6], Mabel [4], Madge [3], Elsie [2] and Doris [1 month]. All were born in Cockfield
The pension card has stepmother at Windsor Green, Cockfield.

His brother Albert died of wounds in May 1918 see here


He enlisted in Bury St. Edmunds.
Not having his service record it cannot be said where he was or when he was wounded. The battalion had been in training near Mory, then relieved the 1st Gordon Highlanders around Bullecourt on 10th December. At the start of the month they had been in trenches at Queant, going to billets at Mory on 5th.
