Henry James Lomas was born on 7th January 1875 in Stanningfield (1st qtr 1875 Thingoe 4a:520) son of George and Harriett LOMAX (née NICHOLES). CWGC has him born in Depden, unlike all the census which say Stanningfield. He was baptised in St.Nicholas, Stanningfield on 14th February 1875

1881 census...Aged 5,he was at Melon Green, Lawshall with his father George LOMAX [30] farm labourer born Stanningfield; his mother Harriett [29] born Thetford; sisters Sarah [8] born Stanningfield, Sophie L [4] born Lawshall, Rose A [2] born Stanningfield and Kate Elizabeth [under 1 month] born Lawshall.

1891 census...Aged 15, he was in Brockley with his parents; sisters Sophia, Rose, Mary [10] born Lawshall and Flora [2] born Brockley; brothers George [8] born Lawshall and William [4] born Brockley.

1901 census...Not found in this census, possibly in South Africa in the Army. His parents were at Little Elms, Depden with his brothers George and Ernest [9] born Brockley; sisters Florence Mary and Daisy Mahala [8] born Depden. It was Daisy who married Harry COCKLE

He married Ellen BLAKE of Chedburgh in 1910.

1911 census...Aged 36, married, a Corporal in the 2nd Battalion, Suffolk Regiment, he was at Barrosa Barracks, Aldershot. His wife Ellen [23] born Chedsburgh, was at 11 Queens Road, Aldershot with their daughter Gladys Irene [9 months] born Bury St.Edmunds.

On the pension card the guardian of the children was Mrs Sophie PICTON, of 41 Grafton Road, Holloway, N7. The children were : Gladys Irene [4-7-1910], Ernest Harry [15-1-1912], William Frederick [7-5-1915] and Reginald John [12-10-1916]

His brother in law Harry Claud COCKLE died of wounds in France in 1917 see here


He enlisted in Sheffield

He died at Temporary Military Hospital, Shoreham-on-Sea from influenza. There is no trace of a medal index card which suggests that Harry, as a time served regular may have re-enlisted for the Great War but was employed on home duties only at the Army Cookery School at Portslade. His widow died two days after Henry. Her death certificate says she died at 9 Wolsley Road, Portslade by Sea, 29th October 1918, aged 31 years, widow of QMS Harry Lomax, Depot Suffolk Regiment. Cause of death, Influenza.
