William Charles Clarke was born in Hartest in 1881 (2nd qtr 1881 Sudbury 4a:577) son of John and Maria CLARKE (née SMITH). The Army and CWGC have him aged 42 at death

1881 census...Aged 1 week, he (William) was at The Row, Hartest with his father John CLARKE [27] coachman born Hawkedon; his mother Maria [19] born Hartest

1891 census...Aged 10, Charles was at The Green, Hartest with his parents; sister Mary A [9]; brothers Frederick [7] and Stephen [2]. All the children born Hartest.

1901 census...Aged 20, a journeyman baker, he was lodging with Fred and Emily PASK (master baker) at The Green, Hartest. His parents were at The Green, Hartest with his sister May and brothers Fred J., Stephen, John P and Frank

1911 census...Aged 30, Charles, a postman, was at Churchgate, Hartest Green with his parents and brothers Frederick, Stephen and Philip, all labourers and Frank a baker.

He married Rougham born May ALBON [6-1-1890] in 1914

On the pension card his widow was at The Row, Hartest with their children, adopted son Basil Charles Clark ALBON [17-6-1912], Cora May [4-12-1914] and William Charles [13-10-1916]

His brother John Philip was killed earlier that year. see here


He enlisted in Brockley. He died of wounds at 20th Casualty Clearing Station, Boisleux au Mont, France
With no service record available and dying of wounds at a C.C.S. it impossible to say exactly when or where he was wounded
