Bertram Stephen Foreman was born in Pakenham (1st qtr 1876 Thingoe 4a:559), son of Charles and Maria Elizabeth FOREMAN (née CALLAS).
Baptised in St.Mary's Pakenham on 2nd April 1876.
1881 census...Aged 5, he was at Fen Road, Pakenham with his father Charles FOREMAN [29] farm labourer; his mother Maria [24] born Livermere; brothers William [6], Walter [3] and Charles [1] and sister Ettie [2 months d.1883]. All except his mother were born in Pakenham. 1891 census...Aged 15, a shepherd's page, he was at Grimstone Road, Pakenham with his parents; brothers William (lime burner), Walter (farm labourer); Charles (back house boy), Henry J [8], Percy C [4] and Sidney [1] and sister Hetty F [3] 1901 census...Aged 24, a maltster, he was at Fort Chateau a l'Etoc, St Annes, Alderney, apparently still a civilian. At Grimstone Road still were his parents (father now rough carpenter on estate); brothers Harry (horseman), Percy(farm labourer), Archie [9] and Frank [6] born Thurston); sister Ettie; sister in law Jane FOREMAN [22] born Pakenham. 1911 census...Not found in this census. At The Fen, Pakenham were his parents, brothers Percy (now a widower) and Frank (both farm labourers). His mother had lost 4 of her 12 children. He married Kate Brooks [1-12-1890] in Cambridge in 1915. Their daughter Emily (married WILKERSON) was born on 18-1-1916 and son Archibald on 25-8-1918 d.1986. They lived at 77 East Road, Cambridge. Living at Meadow Lane, Thurston,in 1896, (having already been turned down by reason of being under height) he served in the Suffolk Militia
(7-1-1896 to 6-1-1902 No. 4188. Next he enlisted in Bury St. Edmunds on 11th May 1903 in the Suffolk Regiment, giving his age as 25 years
4 months, born and living in Pakenham, single, a labourer. He was 5 feet 3 inches tall, weighed 132 lbs, chest 35 to 37 inches, blue eyes,
dark brown hair, Church of England, next of kin, his father Charles FOREMAN of Pakenham. No 6097, he enlisted for 4 years, ending on 10th
May 1907. He enlisted in the Suffolk Regiment on 15th July 1916 at Bury St. Edmunds, was briefly transferred to 17th Yorkshire Regiment then transferred to the 11th Royal Scots Fusiliers No. 50887. Attached to 443 Agricultural Company, Labour Corps at Dorchester in 1917 for 3 weeks then returned to 11th Royal Scots Fusiliers. By May 1918 he was in the 13th battalion. At Canterbury Military Hospital on 1st December 1917 he was diagnosed with a sebaceous cyst of the neck. This was removed on 3rd December 1916. Transferred to VAD Hospital Lenham on 20th December until 9th February 1918 for 51 days. On 6th January 1919 he was admitted to Military Hospital Sandwich ( where it was noted as 'NYD' ie Not Yet Determined), and on 11th February sent to the Eastern General Hospital in Cambridge. There they determined it was a growth in the larynx. He was medically boarded and then discharged in March 1919 . His documents state his medical condition was aggravated by military service. He died in Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge. The cause of death on 1st April 1919 was certified as "Carcinoma of the Larynx" and "Heart Failure"
