Horace Rose was born in Bradfield St George on 5th June 1898 (3rd qtr 1898 Thingoe 4a:824) son of Charles and Sarah ROSE (née SUTTON)
1901 census...Aged 2, he was at 10 Chapel Yard, Rougham with his father Charles ROSE,[29] threshing machine labourer, born Bradfield St George; his mother Sarah [28] born Rougham; sister Ethel Alice [8] born Denaby Main, Yorkshire; brothers Charles Henry [7], Ernest [4] and Percy Harry [2 months]. All the boys were born in Rougham. 1911 census...Aged 12, he was at Kingshall Green, Rougham with his parents, brothers Charles, Ernest, Percy, Albert Edward [7] and George (less than 1 month); sister Grace [2]. The children were still being born in Rougham. The address of his father on the pension card is "near Chapel" Bradfield St George His brother Ernest was killed in 1916 on the 1st day of the battle of the Somme, at Montauban see here |

He joined the Army Reserve on 5th July 1916, mobilised 8th June 1917,and posted from 4th Reserve Battalion, Blandford to BEF 20th August 1917
to Hawke Battalion, Royal Naval Division. Bullet wound left side but remained at duty 14th October. Twice gassed and admitted to General Hospital in Etaples returning to unit on 24th November Died of wounds 15th December 1917. Next of kin informed 4th January 1918 15th December war diary :- Quiet day. Artillery very quiet work on wiring and trench repairs. Reserve Co ("D") employed on carrying rations and water for whole Bn. Casualties 4 killed 6 wounded. <
