Birth registration not found. Born 6th May 1903, son of Charles and Ruth CAMPAN (née MORTLOCK ) apparently baptised in Southend on Sea.

1911 census...Aged 8, he was at Windmill House, Long Melford with his father Charles CAMPAN [39] horse,man on farm; his mother Ruth [32]; sisters Laura [12] and Agnes [2]; brother Leonard [5]. All apparently born in Shimpling.

He married Grace M HEY in Rochford in 1934.
In the 1939 register, a general labourer, he was at Queens Road, Southend on Sea with his wife Grace (later to marry William MORRIS in 1947). His parents; brothers Leonard [21-5-1906], Charles [18-2-1915] and George [3-9-1917] were at 2 Gents Lane, Shimpling ( 1 closed record)

His brother Charles was killed in Italy in 1944 see here


The Army Casualty list has him as previously missing, believed killed but then as Died as a Prisoner of War. A later list amended that to killed in action.
He was originally buried in Epagne-Epagnette, just south of Abbeville and re-interred in Abbeville on 10th February 1948.
