Samuel John Herbert was born in Groton on 28th October 1914 (4th qtr 1914 Sudbury 4a:1710 ) son of Maurice and Bertha HERBERT (née SQUIRRELL). Apparently always known in the family as John

He married Winifred Bertha MORTLOCK in 1939. In the 1939 register they were at Woodcot, Shimpling Street, with Winifred's parents, Herman and Hester MORTLOCK. Samuel was a motor mechanic.


Other than the comments in the Bury Free Press and his death being registered in Belfast, nothing further is known of his military service nor the illness which brought about his death
